Nomination Guidelines
Nominations open in a few days and I just thought I'd put out a few guidelines/reminders to help streamline the process for you once nominations open. I also wanted to offer participants/potential participants the chance to ask questions/get clarification if necessary. So here this is. If I haven't covered something you think needs to be covered, please let me know.
1. You'll be able to nominate up to 20 pairings per AO3 account. All ships that meet the criteria (fewer than 500 works, complete and in English, of greater than 1000 words) will be accepted. This does include a handful of more popular/visible ships. That's just how it worked out this time.
2. Poly ships are welcome. Crossover ships are welcome.
2a. Crossover ships can mean two or more characters from disparate corners of Star Wars land (something like, say, Mara Jade/Carth Onasi) or can include characters from different canons altogether (so... I don't know, Padmé Amidala/Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks). As long as at least one character is from Star Wars, you're good to go.
3. Selfcest pairings will be allowed as long as they meet the same criteria all rare pairs have to meet. Selfcest moresomes in which other characters feature will be eligible if the moresome minus the duplicated character(s) are eligible. So a Leia/Han/Leia work would not be eligible because Leia/Han isn't eligible. However, Leia/Han/Luke/Leia would be eligible because Leia/Han/Luke is eligible. A Leia/Lando/Leia/Lando work would be eligible because Leia/Lando is eligible.
3a. Regarding the nomination of selfcest moresomes involving other characters: you only need to do so if you want to possibly match on that selfcest pairing. Otherwise, including it as an optional detail/prompt for the base pairing is perfectly fine so long as you're okay with receiving a gift with only the base pair and none of the selfcest component.
4. All parts of canon and Legends are welcome. This includes Rogue One even though it's not out yet.
5. If the pairing tag is a canonical one, you shouldn't have to specify the fandom in your nomination for that pairing, though you're more than welcome to. If the tag is not canonical, AO3 is probably going to ask you to specify a fandom when you try to submit it if there isn't a fandom already included. Star Wars - All Media Types is the one you're going to want to use in that case. This goes for any potential crossover pairings as well.
5a. If there is a canonical tag for the pairing (i.e. it shows up in the drop down box when you start typing it in the pairing field), please use it when nominating.
Guideline six gets a bit in the weeds regarding how AO3 organizes pairing tags. I apologize in advance for that. When you're nominating pairings, you don't need to worry about this, just nominate the pairings you want to nominate that you believe meet the criteria, but if a pairing gets rejected or is in a slightly different form in the tag set, this is probably why and I wanted to let you all know in advance how I'm going about that so no one is taken by surprise. I'm also happy to explain my reasoning, but the following points feel kind of convoluted and long already, so unless anyone actually cares about that, I'm going to leave it out. If you do care, feel free to comment on this post, PM me, email me (litgirlnicole@gmail.com), whatever makes you comfortable.
6. Kylo Ren ships will be evaluated according to that ship's meta tag. For example, if a hypothetical participant nominated "Poe Dameron/Ben Solo" or "Poe Dameron/Kylo Ren" (both of which are subtags), I'd look at the "Poe Dameron/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren" tag (the meta tag) for eligibility. If eligible, it would then be included in the tag set as "Poe Dameron/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren". If you want to nominate a Kylo Ren pairing by its meta tag, I would be grateful, but I don't expect anyone to do so.
6a. I don't know off the top of my head about any other characters who have this meta tag/sub tag distinction issue and who have this distinction to such a degree that it will make a difference regarding eligibility if they did, but if I come across any meta tag pairings like it in the nominations, this policy will hold for them, too.
6b. For characters such as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, who hasn't been meta tagged in his pairings the way Kylo has as far as I can tell (even though it's nearly the same principle at work for both characters in a lot of ways and if one is going to be treated that way, then so should the other), I'll be looking at both pairing (Skywalker and Vader) numbers and will add the two numbers together to determine eligibility. However, if the pairing is eligible, it'll go into the tag set whichever way it was nominated.
So, say you want Rex/Anakin Skywalker in the tag set. I'll then look at Rex/Anakin as well as Rex/Darth Vader (pretend for a moment that there's a work on AO3 tagged that way) and try to filter out any that might be tagged with both so no work is counted against the pairing twice. If it meets the requirements to be considered a rare pair for this exchange, it'll be accepted into the tag set as Rex/Anakin Skywalker.
6c. This meta tag rule will not apply to pairings involving player characters from KotOR and TOR video games. Therefore if, say, Female Revan/Bastila Shan is nominated, only works tagged with that particular sub tag will count when I'm checking to make sure it's a rare pair. The same goes TOR with the addition of classes. However, you're more than welcome to nominate the meta tags (in this example, Revan/Bastila Shan) if you want works for any version of the player character.
And with that out of the way, I think that's it. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to leave a comment here or, again, PM or e-mail (litgirlnicole@gmail.com) works.
Happy nominations, all! I hope to see all of you nominating come Monday. I certainly can't wait to see what ends up in the tag set!
